Entertainer, Music Producer Ernesto Phillips Dies at 50

Thursday, April 1, 2004; Page B06

Ernesto McKenzie Phillips, 50, a Columbia resident who was a musician in pop rhythm-and-blues groups and then produced a series of local entertainers, including singers Toni Braxton and Kimberly Scott, died March 25 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore after a stroke. He had hypertension.

Mr. Phillips, a native Washingtonian, was raised in Crownsville and graduated from Arundel High School in Gambrills. He was a self-taught guitarist, and during high school he attended the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore to study trumpet.

He was a graduate of Anne Arundel Community College and attended Howard University, where he intended to study medicine as his father -- a psychiatrist -- had. He decided instead to make music his career.

With his four brothers -- George, Lloyd, Orlando and Gregory -- Mr. Phillips formed Licyndiana, an R&B group named after his mother and his sisters. Ernesto Phillips sang and played guitar. He also wrote songs and did production work.

Singer Renee Diggs, who was Mr. Phillips's longtime companion, and musician-songwriter Kayode "Ky" Adeyemo later joined Licyndiana.

Mr. Phillips had greater success as leader, co-producer and primary songwriter of a successor pop R&B band called Starpoint, which included the same members except for Lloyd.

The band toured nationally, opening for such performers as Luther Vandross, and appeared on "Soul Train," "Solid Gold" and other television programs. Its album "Restless" (1986) sold more than 500,000 copies, according to news reports, and included the hit song "Object of My Desire."

At the 1990 Washington Area Music Awards, Starpoint was named best R&B/urban group. Mr. Phillips, on guitar, was named best instrumentalist.

The group disbanded about 1990 as members went in different directions professionally. Until his death, Mr. Phillips worked as a producer. He owned and operated Longevity Records and Pearl Studios, both in Columbia.

"I pledged that once we made it, I was going to prove there is a lot of talent in this area," he told The Washington Post in 1995.

His best-known find is Braxton, the Grammy Award-winning singer whom he met through a friend.

In recent months, he worked as a counselor for teenagers at Sheppard Pratt psychiatric clinic in Ellicott City.

Survivors include his mother, Ana Phillips, of Columbia; four brothers, George Phillips and Lloyd Phillips, both of Columbia, and Orlando Phillips and Gregory Phillips, both of Annapolis; and two sisters, Diane Laguerre of Elk Ridge, Md., and Lisa Phillips of Columbia.

DETROIT (AP) - Ali-Ollie Woodson, who led the legendary Motown quintet The Temptations in the 1980s and '90s and helped restore them to their hit-making glory with songs including "Treat Her Like A Lady," has died, a friend said. He was 58.

Woodson died Sunday in southern California after battling cancer, Motown Alumni Association President Billy Wilson said. Wilson said Woodson's wife, Juanita, told him about the death Sunday.

Woodson was not an original member of the group, which had several lineup changes since it started in the 1960s. But he played an integral part in keeping the Temptations from becoming just nostalgia act.

Solomon Burke Early this morning, Sunday, October 10, 2010, the legendary King of Rock & Soul, Solomon Burke, our father, passed away due to natural causes.

Solomon had just arrived at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, the Netherlands for a sold out show at Paradiso with Dutch band, De Dijk.  He was on his way to spread his message of love as he loved to do.

This is a time of great sorrow for our entire family.  We truly appreciate all of the support and well wishes from his friends and fans.  Although our hearts and lives will never be the same, his love, life and music will continue to live within us forever.  As our family grieves during this time of mourning, thank you for respecting our privacy.

Soulfinger Singer Jayanti I want to introduce to you the soulful sounds of Jayanti, an independent singer-songwriter from Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Jayanti was 1 of 4 fresh faces of July on YouTube’s Music Tuesdays channel.  Along with this feature on YouTube’s home page, Jayanti’s no-budget video “Girl from Mars” earned over 200,000 views!
In addition, I also wanted to share with you Jayanti’s beautiful rendition of “Inside My Love” - a tribute to songbird Minnie Riperton? More info can be found on Bandcamp and www.jayanti.me. Jayanti’s single “Girl from Mars” is now available for purchase on iTunes.
Willie Mitchel Passed Away Soul music lost a great legend on January 5th. Willie Mitchell was responsible for the music of Al Green and the entire sound of Memphis based record label Hi-Records. Poppa Willie passed away at age 81 and leaves a tremendous catalog of classics behind. Dutch music collector Djef, who manages the Originals section at online jukebox 22tracks, selected 22 gems as an ode to him and his legacy.

Mitchell produced sparkling jewels like Al Green's Let's Stay Together and diamonds in the rough such as Could I Be Falling In Love by the more obscure Syl Johnson. Rather than having a hard time keeping up with the pace of music, the distinguished sound he once wrote the blueprint for remains timeless. Do You Feel Me by Anthony Hamilton, produced by The Bomb Squad's Hank Shocklee and arranged by Willie Mitchell is a perfect example of how the sound of Hi-Records is still very much sought-after in today's music.
Levi Stubbs Four Tops

Levi Stubbs, the legendary lead singer of the Four Tops, and one of the greatest soul vocalists of all time, has died in Detroit after a long illness. Stubbs' death leaves only one remaining Tops founding member, Abdul "Duke" Fakir. As the distinctive lead of the Four Tops, Stubbs was best known for his deep, passionate vocal style that turned Holland-Dozier-Holland compositions like "Bernadette" and "Reach Out" and later, upon the group's move from Motown to ABC Records, on adult soul songs such as "Ain't No Woman (Like the One I Got)" and "Keeper of the Castle."

A heart attack and stroke permanently sidelined Stubbs a half decade ago, and he was wheelchair-bound as he took the stage for the group's 50th anniversary celebration in 2005. But Levi Stubbs will long be remembered as a staple of Motown's greatest years and as one of the most distinctive and revered vocalists of all time. He will be greatly missed.

The Ultimate Black Music Database is now online for one year. I started this database with 1100 artists, 2500 albums, and 7000 tracks. This amount is more than doubled. The amount of covers, samples is also increased and the updates will be still on regular basis. I just recently introduced the members/appear on list.

It was a year with ups and downs. The downs with the deadth of our favorit artists, Ernesto McKenzie Phillips (starpoint), John Whitehead, Ray Charles, Syreeta, Rick James, Tyrone Davis, and Rennee Diggs.

The ups with the new albums of 70s/80s artists like The O' Jays, {safm}Brenda Russell{/safm}, Teena Marie, Michael Cooper, Stephanie Mills, Anita Baker, Will Downing, Al green. And a Soul & Funk music stream for this site.

For me it is exactly the right moment to change the layout for this site. From now on it will be called The Ultimate Soul And Funk Music Database. Many Thanx to Remco for spending hours behind his favorit PS app. The URL is also changed to https://www.soulandfunkmusic.com. The old URL will be still available.
I hope you like it, Mark
