Kashif began his music career as a teenager, playing keyboards in the funk band B.T. Express. He eventually went on to study music at the Manhattan School of Music, where he honed his skills as a producer and songwriter. In the early 1980s, he signed a record deal with Arista Records and released his debut album, "Kashif," in 1983. The album included the hit single "I Just Gotta Have You (Lover Turn Me On)," which reached the top 5 on the R&B charts.

Over the next few years, Kashif released several more albums, including "Send Me Your Love," which included the hit single "Baby Don't Break Your Baby's Heart," and "Condition of the Heart," which featured the hit single "Love Changes," a duet with Meli'sa Morgan.

He was also a pioneer in the use of technology in music production, and was one of the first producers to use MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) technology in his recordings. He was also an advocate for the rights of musicians and songwriters, and was actively involved in the fight for fair compensation for artists.
