"I Must Not Be Kinky" is the intriguing title of a new four track mini album from Tina Harris, a white R&B singer who has been working in and around the Los Angeles area for a few years. The mini album is released on Shanachie Records and includes one song produced by Lenny White and another two written by Bus Boys leader Kevin O'Neal.
Omni Records has signed a distribution deal with Atlantic Records (US) and first single from the Philly based label is "You Are The One" by Stroke which includes in its ranks two former members of Fat Larry's Band. . . Gap Band offshoot act Billy & Baby Gap currently being produced by Charlie Wilson and Total Experience chief Lonnie Simmons.

New Philly World Records signing Benidito & Lori have their debut single released later this month Stateside. Meanwhile, label stablemate Eugene Wilde is currently putting the finishing touches to his second album.

The Spinners (formerly the Detroit Spinners) have pacted with Mirage Records for American distribution although the veteran group's long time association with Atlantic continues in remaining world territories where they remain an Atlantic recording set. The group's first album for Mirage is currently in production.

Strong double header from Johnny Taylor on his new Malaco outing with "Still Called The Blues" and "She's Cheatin' On Me".

Currently hitting home on many UK dance floors is the single by Krystal Davis whose voice may be familiar having graced a number of New York 12-inchers. Krystal's outing on Urban Rock Records is "So Smooth".

The BarKays' new album on PolyGram is "Banging The Wall".

Jimmy Cliff is co-starring with Robin "Popeye" Williams in the movie Club Paradise. Meanwhile, Cliff's new album "Cliff Hanger" is just out Stateside and contains two tracks co-written by Latoya Jackson — "Brown Eyes" and "American Sweet". The remaining eight tracks on display were written by producer Amir Bayyan and Cliff. Kool & the Gang's horn section appear on four cuts and former Weather Report bassist Jaco Pastorius also appears on one track.

Arista has signed Bootsy Collins whose initial project for his new company is expected to feature a slew of contemporary funksters.

Teddy Pendergrass, permanently paralyzed from a near fatal car accident in 1982, was recently presented with the 1985 Invacare Award in Washington. The award is named after a manufacturer of wheelchairs, homecare beds and patient equipment and honours those public figures who have overcome a physical handicap.

A proposed tributer to the creators of the Philly Sound — Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Thorn Bell, has now evolved into the American BMA tribute to the city of Philadelphia and its music in general and will take place from October 18th to 21st. However, there are special plans for a tribute to Gamble, Huff and Bell and their hit laden Mighty Three catalogue.

Arthur Baker and Little Steven are on the verge of placing their anti-apartheid single "Sun City" with an American major label. The single, a musical attack on those entertainers who have played in South Africa has attracted a wide collection of musicians who have contributed to the record or agreed to. Participants from the rock world include Lou Reed, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Edmunds, the Ramones' Joey Ramone and Jackson Browne, whilst Latin stars including Ruben Blades and Ray Barretto are reggae artists Jimmy Cliff, Big Youth and Linton Kwesi Johnson have added their support. Rap is represented by Melle Mel, Duke Bootee and Afrika Bam-baataa although response from the more mainstream area of popular black music has been limited to Bobby Womack, Kashif, George Clinton, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, and Nona Hendryx. "Feel It" the single by British group Feelabeelia is just out on the Qwest label and features the unmistakable harmonica playing of S. Wonder Esq. together with his band Wonderlove.

Morris Day's solo debut album "The Colour Of Success" is just out in America and features six tracks said to be mainstream black pop with more than a touch of the well known Day sense of humour. A US tour is scheduled for September and a new script is said to be underway to mark the ex-Time's return to the big screen. Meanwhile, Day's former employer, Prince, has obviously not completely forgiven him for departing the fold and has included a track entitled "Mutiny" on his recent production of The Family album.


Tsafrika stage a benefit concert for the African National Congress \ of South Africa on Thursday1 August 29th at the Town & Coun- j try Club (formerly the Forum) and will commence at 8.00pm and runs to 2.00am. The concert will feature Sanko, the band from the country of Lesotho which is surrounded by South Africa who have banned both Sanko's music and personnel, a fate they share with another performer at the concert, Julian Bahula Jabula. Somo So mo, the product of Zairean guitarist Fan Fan and featuring singer/dancer Doreen Webster will also be appearing. Tickets are £4.50 or £4 with concessions and all profits will be donated to the A.N.C.

The M&M JazzBar in Mary] Magdalene Crypt in Munster* Square, London NW1 continues its policy of new music in unique surroundings and atmosphere throughout September every Friday evening with the following bands: Freebop with Annie Whitehead, Ted Emmett, Eddie Parker, Nick Stephens, John Stevens plus Art Hammer (September 6th); Gail Thompson and Mario Castronari plus Art Hammer (September 6th); Gail Thompson, Mario Castronari, Nick Stephens and John Stevens plus Yes But (20th) and In Your Own Time (27th).
