Simply Put, Patti Austin Is A Fantastically Gifted Vocalist. So Much So, That She Should Be More Of A House Hold Name Than She Is At This Point. I Think The Reason For That Is The Inconsistence In Her Pop Album Releases. There Will Usually Be At Least Two Tracks Per Album That Are Really Catchy, Followed By Filler And Songs That Are Just O.k. Then Came "Getting Away With Murder" And That All Changed. Pairing Ms. Austin With The Auspicious "Flye Tyme" Production Team Was Genius. Patti Austin Can Sing Anything And Make It Sound Good, So The Key For Her Is Getting The Right Material. Jimmy Jam And Terry Lewis Come Through "big-time". On "The Heat Of Heat", Patti Has Never Sounded Sexier And The Performance Puts In The Frame Of Mind Of Diana Ross At Her Best. Monte Moir (The Pleasure Principle), Come Through With Penned, "Only A Breath Away". This Track Has A Breezy, Contemporary Jazz Feel And Could Probably Re-emerge As A Radio Hit Today. The Stunner On The Album Is Jam/Lewis Hautingly Beautiful, "Summer Is The Coldest Time Of Year" And Outside Of Patti Austin's Featured Vocals On Quincy Jones, "The Dude" Stands As One Of Her Best Pop Vocal Performances. "If I Believe" Was Not Penned By The "Flye-Tyme" Unit, But Is Still Stands As A Strong Ballad Along With "Anything Can Happen". Even The Title Track With It's Funky Intro And Synth 80's Rhythm Beat Succeedes. Proving Once Again That Given Interesting Lyrics And Memorable Hooks, Patti Austin Can Do No Wrong. The Remaining Tracks Are All Mis-haps That Just Don't Work And Almost Sound Like They Should Be On A Seperate Album. Surprisingly, "Getting Away With Murder" Was Not Considered A Commercial Success. This Was Probably Due To Confusion By The Record Label On How To Market The Project And The Radio Dominace Of The "Minneappolis Sound" Which Flye-Tyme Was A Part Of And Which Flooded The Air-waves At The Time. Reguardless, "Getting Away With Murder" Was A Wonderful Effort And Stands As One Of Patti Austin's Most Consistant And Rewarding Pop Efforts.
