Soul And Funk Music Album Reviews

Willie Hutch - The Mark Of The Beast Soul Brother Records recently re-issued three albums from the early seventies of the former Motown producer, writer, and arranger Willie Hutch. These albums are 'Fully Exposed', 'The Mark Of The Beast' and 'Ode To My Lady'.

This album 'The Mark Of The Beast' is from 1974 and was originally released on Motown Records (M6-815S1). This nine track album is funkier, rougher than his previous debut album 'Fully Exposed', recorded a year earlier. On this album Hutch exchanged the strike instruments Violins and Harps for the brass instruments like trumpet, sax. This album reached #41 on the R&B Billboard chart.

Low-d - You Bring The Change Low-D featuring Gary Poole. Low-D is Daniel Brelaz and Chris Godfrey both from Bern Switzerland. This is the debut album for Low-D. You may already have heard the title track 'You Bring The Change' of their record on the "Soul Unsigned.Vol.4" album or its related coverage. This track is one of my favourite.
The music is written in London UK and sounds typical like it. The album is a mixture of soul, acid-jazz, gospel, blues and pop music, and was recorded in North London at the Boogie Back Studio, with the help of a few of our friends Toby Baker(Keys), Ernie McKone(Drums) and Gary Poole who is the vocalist with good voice. Additional instruments were recorded in Switzerland and the album was brought back to England to be mixed and mastered.

His new track "I Love It (Papi-Aye-Aye-Aye)" is the first track of this album and is very tuneful, sexy and sounds if he was never been away. Vocals are beautiful, and contains nice analog synth sounds.

3 Central CD A Feelin' Inside Fresh, new and innovative, 3 Central blazes onto the music scene with their debut CD "A Feelin' Inside". This Smooth Jazz/Inspirational Trio has one of the hottest new sounds in Contemporary Jazz and Gospel.

Their brand new CD and live performances offer a powerful exchange of positive energy between musicians. This is quite rare considering that bands are no longer the norm in today's modern music, where technology inspires solo efforts. Kudos to the solo artists for making great music, but how many notable bands can you name today? That is why 3 Central is a pleasure to hear as their recordings provide a unified sound with live instrumentation. Acoustic drums in particular, really bring to life the energy and feel of this band's recordings.

3 Central is definitely one to watch!

The Temptations - Still Here The Temptations: Still Tall, Talented, Tantalizing... Still Here. On the eve of their 50th anniversary, the Temptations are back with their 49th album, appropriately titled Still Here. It's their first since Back To Front, which hit the R&B Top 20 album charts in 2007. Across six decades, the mighty Temptations have thrilled audiences worldwide with classic songs, pinpoint choreography and a lineup of great singers that never fails to deliver. Members of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, winners of Motown first Grammy® Award, one of the greatest groups of all time, the "Tempts" are iconic masters of pop and soul. Still Here continues the Temptations tradition. Infused with old-school harmony and contemporary touches, the album is executive produced by original Temptation Otis Williams, who produced several tracks on the album. Among the highlights:

"Change Has Come" is an energetic tribute to the election of President Barack Obama and a rousing performance by lead singer "Big" Bruce Williamson, who is equally exciting on the nostalgic "Going Back Home." "Hold Me," featuring Terry Weeks, is a beautiful ballad, one of several slow jams on the album, like "Woman," featuring long-time high tenor Ron Tyson, who also simmers on the mid-tempo "Warm Summer Nights." "Swatyismygirlooyeah" is a modern update of the Motown chestnut "My Girl." "Listen Up" is a cautionary tale, a new millennium version of "Ball Of Confusion." "Soul Music" pays homage to great music from "back in the day" - a sound that remains vital today. Same as the Temptations. Still Here.
