Soul And Funk Music Album Reviews

The Reddings - Back To Basics A nice early 80s set from The Reddings – the group featuring two sons of Otis Redding and a sweet set of funk steeped R&B! Dexter Redding plays bass, and there's a whole lot of bass in the mix, bringing some funk into the groove very nicely – with some post disco pop soul melodic numbers, that work very well, too. The Reddings bring out a mix of tighter, leaner numbers with pop funk style with a couple of sweet, string accented slow jams on Class and it's solid stuff! Titles include "Class (Is What You Got)", "If You Feel It", "Main Nerve", "Hurts So Bad", "Love Dance", "Love Is Over" and more

Oliver Cheatham - The Boss Vinyl-masterpiece just released, on their label PTG, a CD reissue of Oliver’s album 'The Boss' from 1982. This eight track album was originally released on MCA Records.

The eight tracks on this album are a mix of down, mid-tempo soul, boogie tunes.

Oliver is the name of the band and the lead singer is the unmistakably Oliver Cheatham. What can i say about Oliver Cheatham. Cheatham’s voice is unique and immediately recognizable, just like the voice of Jocelyn Brown. Oliver Cheatham is born in 1948, Detroit, Michigan. His biggest hit was ‘Get Down Saturday Night’ from 1983. Don’t underestimate this album, it’s less commercial than ‘Get Down’ but very enjoyable. It’s full of superb boogie tunes.

The tracks are the more than six minute boogie tune ‘Everybody Wants To Be The Boss’, the four minute plus ‘Make Up Your Mind’, ‘Boogie Stomp’ and last but not least ‘Don’t take Your Love Away’. All these boogie tracks have the ingredients it needs such as the Bass, Synthesizers, Drums, Brass and guitar rifs. The other tracks like ‘I Gave Myself To You’, ‘I Want Your Love’ are very soulful with nice melodies and background vocals. All mentioned tracks become a 5 star rating. Highly recommended.

You can compare the sound of this album with albums of Dayton, the Dazz Band and One Way.

Gary Taylor - G.T.

One of the albums on my want list, for many years, was Gary Taylor's debut album from 1983 originally pressed on vinyl in the a&m records factory.

But finally it's on CD. This CD contains as bonus the track 'On the line' in a long version. The other nine tracks are also on the vinyl version. Gary produced his debut album by himself with the help of Craig Ragland. Beside writing and producing Gary played the Fender Rhodes, Acoustic Piano, Synthesizers and does the Lead Vocals.

Larry Graham And Graham Central Station - Raise Up Bassist Larry Graham – the architect of the slap-and-pluck bass technique that defined the funk sound of the ‘60s and ‘70s and continues to inspire bassists across virtually every genre to this day – may specialize in the low end of the sonic spectrum, but he’s just as ready to take his music to unprecedented heights. He’s been doing it for more than four decades – first as the rock-solid foundation for a string of enduring and iconic hits by Sly and the Family Stone, and later as the head of his own powerhouse unit, Graham Central Station.

After a 13-year hiatus, Graham Central Station makes its triumphant return with Raise Up, set for release on Listen 2 Entertainment distributed and marketed by Razor & Tie on September 25, 2012. Raise Up includes new versions of three classic GCS tracks, along with ten new songs for a new generation of fans. The album features guest appearances by Prince – a longtime collaborator with Graham and GCS since the late 1990s – as well as songwriter/guitarist/producer Rafael Saadiq.

On this album other great names are collaborating with Benson. Names like the Drummer Harvey Mason, pianist Joe Sample, keyboardist and musical director David Garfield, bassist Ben Williams are present on this album. This album is recorded with an old school approach the crew came together in the studio with a minimum of prior rehearsal time and lay down tracks in something very close to the live experience.
