Album Review Steve 'The Scotsman' Harvey The Everyday People Project Vol. 1 [XECD49] Print

You'll probably remember Steve Harvey from the early eighties when he made two 12 inch singles entitled "Tonight" and "Something Special", both released on London Records. He also produced tracks for the debut albums of both Total Contrast and Five Star. Steve got little sleep during the late eighties and nineties! Behind the scenes he worked with other great artists like Impromp2, George Duke, Jeff Lorber, Gary Brown, Gerald Albright and many more. He wrote six of the tracks on the last two Temptations albums 'Legacy' and 'Reflections' both of which he produced.

Currently he has just released an album 'The Everyday People Project Vol. 1' featuring artists such as Ledisi, Donnie, Rahsaan Patterson, N’Dambi and Keite Young. This album includes tracks from a limited edition vinyl EP entitled ‘The Soul Quarter’. Steve not only wrote all the tracks and produced the album but also played drums and keyboards.

The album opens with a song by Ledisi. This track could have well been the signature tune of a movie like 'Jackie Brown'. It starts with an old fashioned wah wah guitar and continues with an excellent old school sound, just like the Bobby Womack tune of that movie. Speaking about Bobby. The guy 'K.K' on the second track really does sound like him. 'Stay With Me', the third track on this album, has a typical late night pub sound from that same film. The Rahsaan Patterson track, 'That's the Way' needs no further comment. Track number six, 'Troubled Times' is a very soulfull Angie Stone kind of song. Keith Young's song, 'Time brings a change' sounds a little rough against the other tracks. I think that the uptempo song, 'I can't leave me alone' could easily fit in with the Gap Band's repertoire. Pretty Terry's 'Shake It Off'  has a very nice chorus: So just shake, shake, shake, it off and get up and come on just run, just shake it off. My favourite tunes? Well that would have to be 'I can't let you go' and 'That's the way' by Rahsaan Patterson.

'The Everyday People Project Vol. 1' project has emerged as a very soulfull CD. Every instrument, on every cut is played live and that makes this CD very Old school. A perfect CD for cruisin' along 110th street or around Picadilly circus.
